A few days later we read the article Barry Noreen wrote in The Gazette on the homeless. We knew as a family we could help in some way. Last Sunday we made up lunches, gathered up a sleeping bag, scarves, sweatshirts, hats, gloves and drove down there. We walked down the embankment when a woman by the name of Maggie, who lives there, met us and took us along the creek to distribute the items. She knew everyone by name and the reasons why each ended up homeless. We talked and gave hugs to the people we met and told them we would be back. We have been back twice since then, bringing barrels of firewood and food. The first time we were there the fire and ambulance crew were giving aid and a lot of compassion to a man who lost all feeling in his feet and lower legs. These people are cold, hungry, and some are dying out there. They are so appreciative for whatever help we can give them. What seems so little to us is so much to them. If you are able to help in any small way, please do.CAPTION(S):With around 100 traditional and contems porary fires and fireplaces on permanent display, these great choices add style and value to your home without costing a fortune.Doctors & nurses volunteerKimberly ThorntonMel DownsI do not feel that the city should hire someone to clean up after and monitor these people, but provide a portable toilet and a place to set up their tents, maybe one security guard to make sure it is a safe environment. Whatever the cure, I hope that it is fair to all of us, the taxpayer, the city residents and business owners, and the homeless.Colorado Springs.
