Making my fireplace less of a dead space

MY hole-in-the-wall fireplace had a beautiful modern gas fire but it costs me more to run than my central heating, so we don't use it. Now it is just a big black hole. Have you any suggestions to fill the space to make it more appealing? - Grace Appleby, Hemel Hempstead, Herts

Old masonry fireplaces are often located where it would be much nicer to have large windows or french doors to the outside. Or they are just much more massive than they need to be, taking up valuable floor space. With the advent of modern prefabricated metal fireplaces, it's possible to remove an old masonry fireplace, and replace it (possibly in a new location) with a smaller and more efficient unit.

Fairy lights or church pillar candles set a welcoming scene. Lanterns in bright colours also look good. The image shows Split face uncalibrated slate linear mosaic tiles, at pounds 17.13 per sheet (www.toppstiles.co.uk, 0800 023 4703).

  1. Just fill that whole with plaster of pares and paint it with any dark color. It will look great. But it will look beautiful if the shape of whole is round.
